Navigating Vilnius: Easier Than You Think

Vilnius is a relatively compact city by European capital standards, which works in your favour as a visitor. The historic centre is highly walkable, the public transport network is affordable and extensive, and ride-hailing apps make getting anywhere straightforward. Here's everything you need to know to get around with confidence.

Walking

For most tourists, walking is the primary mode of transport — and rightly so. The Old Town, Užupis, Užupis, and Gediminas Avenue are best explored on foot. Most major attractions are within 20–30 minutes' walk of Cathedral Square. Wear comfortable shoes; cobblestones are charming but uneven.

Public Transport: Buses & Trolleybuses

Vilnius operates an extensive network of buses and electric trolleybuses that covers the entire city, including suburbs. Key facts:

  • Tickets: Purchase via the Trafi or m.Ticket apps, or buy a Vilniečio kortelė (city card) from kiosks and top up with credit. Validate your card or ticket on board.
  • Fare: Single journey fares are very affordable. Day passes and multi-day passes offer good value for heavy users.
  • Hours: Services typically run from around 5:30 AM to midnight. Night buses cover key routes on weekends.
  • Real-time info: The Trafi app (available for iOS and Android) shows live bus locations and departure times — essential for planning.

Ride-Hailing Apps

Two apps dominate in Vilnius:

  • Bolt — The most popular option; generally fast, reliable, and competitively priced. Download before you arrive.
  • Uber — Also available in Vilnius with a good coverage area.

Rides within the city centre are typically inexpensive. Both apps show estimated fares upfront, so there are no surprises.

Taxis

Traditional metered taxis are available but generally more expensive than app-based alternatives. If you do take a street taxi, confirm the price before getting in. Licensed taxis are yellow and display a meter.

Cycling

Vilnius has been steadily expanding its cycling infrastructure. The CycloCity bike-share scheme operates docking stations across the city, with short-term rental available via their app or card. The riverside paths along the Neris and Vilnelė rivers are flat, scenic, and ideal for leisure cycling. Note that Old Town cobblestones can be challenging on standard bikes.

From Vilnius Airport

  • Bus No. 1 connects the airport to the city centre (Lukiškių Square). Journey time is roughly 30–40 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Train: A direct rail link runs between the airport and Vilnius Central Station — fast, cheap, and reliable.
  • Bolt/Uber: Available directly from the arrivals terminal. Recommended for late-night arrivals or if travelling with heavy luggage.
